Belonging in Full Swing

“Whoosh!” The swing flies forward, and Kenny’s smile stretches as wide as the sky. At the park, Kenny is in his element—open space, sunshine, and plenty of room to move freely. But not every place is this easy for him to enjoy. Even when websites or brochures describe a space as accessible, the experience can still be challenging. Physical accessibility is just one part of the picture; environments may include sensory elements—like bright lights, loud sounds, or crowded layouts—that feel overwhelming to some, even if they go unnoticed by others. For Kenny, who is very tall and communicates differently, these factors can sometimes lead to misunderstandings—especially in smaller, bustling places like stores or museums.

Have you ever felt frustrated trying to move through a crowded store or tight space? Just like you, Kenny feels the same way. But for him, stereotypes about disability can lead to unfair expectations, making it harder to simply be himself and be seen as just another member of the community. Kenny, like many people with disabilities, wants what we all want: to belong.

That’s where you make a difference in Kenny’s life. Because of your support, Community Fusion creates opportunities for Kenny and others like him to engage meaningfully in their communities. Inclusion isn’t just about programs—it’s about how society welcomes and values every person. You’re helping Kenny be seen as a neighbor, a volunteer, and a friend. When he visits the library or lends a hand at a local church, Kenny shows the world that communication comes in many forms. Though he doesn’t use spoken words, his iPod, gestures, and sign language let him connect just as deeply. Every smile or fist bump Kenny shares helps shift perceptions and build a more inclusive world—and that’s thanks to you.

You also help Kenny build skills that give him confidence in any setting. At the park, he has the freedom he loves. In smaller spaces like shops or markets, CPARC staff support him in learning how to use his body and space safely. With your support, Kenny can get around all kinds of places.

Because of you, Kenny’s days aren’t limited to programs designed only for people with disabilities.  You give him the chance to live, learn, and thrive in the same spaces as everyone else. That’s real inclusion—and it only happens because you believe in a community where everyone belongs.

P.S. Every gift helps people with intellectual and developmental disabilities belong, be fully included, and show the world their abilities.
